Going Green at SA Hills

November 2, 2020 by Poonam

Hello Friends,

I would like to share about the VSA hills.  VSA is Vasundhara Swatchhta Abhiyan, people’s movement for Clean Air, Clean Water and Toxin-Free Food. There are multiple initiatives going on in these direction. But today I would tell about work at VSA hills.

Volunteers from VSA have adopted a stretch from Pashan to Sus gaon in Pune, aiming to turn this barren land to green one. #Restoring nature

Let’s have some glimpse of it.

We have followed Miyawaki style here… Have you heard of it before…

Okay, let me tell you some about it…

Miyawaki is a technique pioneered by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki. This helps to build dense native forests. The approach is to ensure that plant growth is 10 times faster and the resulting plantation is 30 times denser than usual. In this procedure we plant dozens of native species in the same area, and becomes maintenance free after the first three years.

So in above collage you can see the journey of our Miyawaki style forest, in one of the patch of our VSA hills.

Overall, we have been able to plant and sustain 500 saplings on VSA hills. Thanks to the continuous efforts of our dedicated volunteers. 100+ volunteer hours have been logged.

We have built CCTs i.e. continuous contour trenches and checkdams. This has brought remarkable difference in the groundwater level in the areas around the hill. Also we have observed increase in biodiversity in terms of local flora and fauna. There are different birds, snakes and insects thriving on various native trees and grasses that we have conserved on the hill.

We have conducted cleaning events along with our new ELT batches, also various school students and tried to spread awareness about the importance of going green.

After all when many hands come together it creates miracles….

Also we celebrate birthdays of our volunteers and have Van Bhojan there on hills…Its our style of volunteer’s meet…We share new ideas and our work going on through various initiatives…

So, this was small story of our VSA hills….

Will try to bring more information about our other initiatives…till then keep going green…Bye Bye!
