Thanks a lot to Cognizant Outreach and EFI team for taking interesting initiative like Kitchen Gardening and giving us opportunity to show gratitude towards our nature.

I am writing first ever blog in my lifetime, so thought of giving a trial to express my feelings towards my munchkins. Yeah you heard it right…! ϑ

I am emotionally attached with my plants as they are like my kids. Just as we see a newborn baby grow, similarly a seed outgrows and blooms into a flower.

The idea of kitchen gardening has always interested me but never got a chance to put it into action. During this Covid-19 pandemic thought of trying this when EFI team started planning for this initiative. I got motivation from many new EFI – Go Green friends and got a kick-start for executing my plans.

Why to go for Kitchen Gardening:

  • You get fresh herbs whenever you want.
  • It works out cheaper
  • You become a lot healthier.
  • You get a calming dose of nature.
  • Plants repel mosquitoes. (Like Krishna-Lulsi)
  • Easy methods to re-grow

So here, I introduce my munchkins:

1. Lemongrass:

I just love flavor of lemongrass, so thought of starting with this plant.

    Importance:

o Leaves and the oil are used to make medicine

o Used as a fragrance in deodorants, soaps, and cosmetics

o Used in making vitamin A and natural citral.

o It contains substances that are thought to relieve pain and swelling, reduce fever, improve levels of sugar and cholesterol in the blood etc.

Method to Re-grow:

o Select healthy lemongrass leaves and keep its stem part in water for 3-4 days.

o You can see some roots growing after 3 days

o Transfer it to pot containing soil (90%) + coco pit mixed fertilizer (10%)

o Baby leaf and plant will grow within 4 days (Depends on climate)

2. Fenugreek: This is another favorite vegetable of mine.

Importance:

o Fenugreek has been used in alternative medicine as a possibly effective aid in lowering blood sugar levels after a meal in people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes.

o Fenugreek has been used in alternative medicine to treat heartburn, high cholesterol, weight loss, upset stomach, constipation, “hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), gout, fever, baldness, to increase the production of breast milk, and other conditions

Method to grow:

o Wash, rinse and soak Fenugreek seeds in water overnight.

o Drain water completely, cover soaked seeds with wet cloth, and then keep it covered until they begin to sprout. (2-3 days)

o Once the seeds start to germinate spread it over netted tray

o Keep the tray on pot filled with water and which hardly touches the tray (sprout should just touch the water level)

o Try to keep it in partial sunlight for 2 days and observe the growth
